Book Club and Battle of the Books

Regina Huda School is planning to start two new extracurricular activities to promote reading as a fun activity!

The High School Book Club is hoping to start meeting in November when the new library opens. It will provide an opportunity for students in Grades 9-12 to read through a few carefully selected classic works of literature and meet to discuss them on a weekly basis. If you have any questions, ask Mrs. Ramadan or Mr. Turner.

 

We are also planning to compete in the Battle of the Books starting after Winter Break in February. Battle of the Books is a competition in which Middle Years students in Grades 6-8 will read through a predetermined set of books and then will answer questions based on those books. Students will practice for a few weeks before the final competition. If you have any questions, talk to Mr. Turner.

 

Chess Club

The last day for registration is Friday, October 6.  The chess club will be holding training sessions every Tuesday and Thursday from October 10th to October 31st.  The tournament will start on Monday, November 6th.  This week’s schedule can be found chess club.

 

Debate

Regina Huda School has an active Debate Team again this year, with over three dozen students in Grades 6-12 participating. In Debate, students meet weekly to practice and prepare for tournaments that happen throughout the year; at those tournaments, students compete in teams to present arguments either for or against a resolution. At each tournament, each student and team is ranked on the quality of their argument and their public speaking; the top teams and students qualify for Provincials in the spring.

The year is already underway, as practices have already started, and 22 students attended the SEDA fall workshop on Saturday, September 30. The first tournament of the year will take place on Friday, October 20 at École Elsie Mironuck School; high school debaters will compete in Saskatoon at Walter Murray Collegiate on Saturday, October 21. All students will be debating about whether Canada’s Indigenous Peoples should celebrate Canada 150.

We are thankful to Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Gerrior, Ms. Mah, and Mr. Turner for their help as coaches this year. Practices are held every Tuesday after school until 4:45. Please pick up your children right away.   Our teachers are willing to coach your children after school, but it is your responsibility as parents to be here on time to pick up your children. Thank you for all of your support, and we look forward to a great season!

 

MYSLC

The MYSLC group is a student leadership team for elementary students. They plan and organize a number of events throughout the year.

 

Qur’an Competition

This year will be the thirteenth Qur’an Memorization Competition. To stress the importance of Qur’an memorization and as a reminder for our community and students, the Regina Huda School is pleased to hold a competition for Qur’an memorization. The competition is for all levels and classes. It will only include Qur’an memorization, and the quality of Tilawa, fluency while reciting the Qur’an, and the voice during the recitation.

The deadline for registration is October 10, 2017. The competition date will be November 1, 2017.

Science Fair

This year’s Regina Huda School science fair will be held on Thursday, February 15. For information on effective science fair projects, see the Regina Regional Science Fair’s Science Fair Guide.

Sewing Club

We have a group of eight students meeting every Wednesday after school to work on a dress or top for themselves. We also plan to sew some items for charity later in the year.

SLC

The SLC group is a student leadership team for high school students.  They plan and organize a number of events throughout the year.

TedEd

The TedEd Club provides an opportunity for students to share an idea they have with the world! Students work through a curriculum provided by TED to identify their passions and to develop presentation literacy skills so that they can deliver their idea to the world in a well-constructed and engaging talk. The final product is a recorded talk that can be uploaded to the TedEd Clubs YouTube channel so that each student’s idea can be shared with friends, family, and interested viewers. TedEd Club meets once a week, and we look forward to starting another cycle in the future for new students to join and share their ideas with the world!
