Caring for Our Watershed Competition
02 Jun 2020
“Caring For Our Watersheds” is a contest by Nutrien for students in grades 7-12. Students are asked to submit a proposal, as well as implement a plan, on how they can improve their watershed and environment. Entries are judged on innovation, environmental impact, budget, and practicality. Almost 200 proposals were submitted from all over Saskatchewan, including 20 from Regina Huda School’s Grade 8A and 8B students, who worked very hard on their submissions.
Congratulations to Grade 8B students Salma E., Jumana E., Amina K. and Zara Z. who placed in the TOP 10! These girls felt very passionate about the water waste in school from students trying to fill their water bottles with traditional water fountains. “We fill the bottles at an angle, water spills out as we try to fill our bottles to the top. At first it doesn’t seem like a lot of water, but it adds up.” They worked to make a change and earlier this spring, had two goose neck fillers installed on water fountains, one in Hikma and one in the Cortoba building. They raised half of the required funds from a bake sale, and the other half came from Nutrien’s implementation funding. As a prize, each student received $250.
We are proud of the winners, as well as the rest of the Grade 8 RHS participants!
