Environmental Science Front Yard Project
13 Jun 2017
The Environmental Science 20 class at Regina Huda School has had a busy spring! Starting early in the semester, the class proposed the idea of transforming the schools front yard into a more functional space for the school community as well as one that would support the local biodiversity. Much planning went into this project as students conducted research on topics such as native species of plants and soil types, took measurements of the yard and did calculations to figure out the amount of various materials needed so that they could budget appropriately, and organized fundraising activities and reached out to the community for financial support. When the weather cooperated, students were ready to get outside and turn their plans into reality. The students have been hard at work landscaping and planting, not only creating a space that will be much more functional for the school community in the years going forward, but one that will require little maintenance and support local wildlife due to the choice of planting native species of plants.
