Socks, Socks and More Socks!
The girls in the Physical Education 9 class at Regina Huda School engaged in a project in the early weeks of December. After doing some reading with Mrs. Hall, the class found that as the weather turns colder, socks are a highly needed item at shelters and programs that provide assistance to those without homes or who need a hand. As a class, the girls decided to collect new, warm socks to deliver to a few different organizations in Regina to assist with this need.
Hoping to engage the entire Pre K – Grade 12 student body the girls came up with a plan to encourage participation through a competition between classes in the school. A lofty goal of 400 pairs of socks from the entire student body was set. The girls worked on posters and a video to announce the project and get the students on board. As a class, it was decided that a small prize of cupcakes would be awarded to the elementary class that brought the most socks per person. A second prize of cupcakes was awarded to the class with the largest single donation of socks. The high school students were challenged to donate 80 pairs of socks and if they did, those that donated would be able to participate in Minute to Win It type games in the gym on the last morning of school.
Socks or toonies were collected for the week of December 5-9th. After collecting all of the money, the students in the class were able to walk over to Dollarama and each take some money and purchase some socks to add to the cause.
Our Huda School students were extremely generous! Over $500 worth of socks were purchased! The class was blown away when the final count of socks was complete. Our students collected 1615 pairs of socks that were then donated to three organizations in the city. The class also took a quick trip down to Victoria Park and left packages of socks hanging in trees, on benches and poles for people to find and take with them. Congratulations to Mrs. Campbell’s grades 2’s and 3’s and Mrs. Bylsma’s grade 1’s and 2’s for winning the cupcakes. Mrs. Campbell’s class donated 187 pairs of socks and Mrs. Bylsma had one student who donated 10 packages of socks with 20 pairs per package!!!
The project was a wonderful way to get excited about helping others. The class was able to see how working together and having everyone do small pieces makes it easy to accomplish large goals. It was a great opening for teachers and students to engage in discussions about gratitude, generosity and caring for others in the community and it illustrated how simple things can be very meaningful. The class felt that the whole project was a huge success!
Thank you to each one of our RHS community who participated in the socks project with the grade nine girls! It was an amazing display of generosity from our students and community!
